About Letterkenny

The name Letterkenny comes from the irish name Leitir Ceanainn which means “The hillside of the O’Cannons”. Often referred to as the regional economic gateway for the north west of Ireland, it is a large town in County Donegal. It is said to have been an early Gaelic settlement which eventually grew into a modern town at the start of the 17th century around the time of the Plantation of Ulster. The Cathedral of St Eunan and St Columba is one of notable buildings in the town along with St Eunan’s College, St Conal’s Hospital and the Donegal County Museum amongst others.

The largest town in County Donegal, it also shares it’s name with the fictional Ontario town in the TV comedy series “Letterkenny“. An interesting fact is that this fictional town is named after the actual real town of Letterkenny in Donegal. When asked about the origins of the name for his show, the creator Jared Keeso chose the name not only because it sounds authentically Irish, but that it follows the storyline in which the Ontario town of the same name was founded Irish immigrants during the Great Famine of Ireland from 1845 to 1852.
