About Donegal Town
Donegal Town is a historic market town situated on a scenic coastal location and is therefore part of the Wild Atlantic Way. One of the most notable buildings in the town is Donegal Castle, once the stronghold of the O’Donnell clan, it dates back to the 1500s. Within the centre of the town itself is The Diamond, this town square is surrounded by renowned pubs and hotels as well as independent craft shops selling items made from the famous Donegal tweed and knitwear.
The Bank Walk
As a florist in Donegal, the biodiversity of the local area is something that is close to our hearts. The perfect example of such can be found on The Bank Walk. This is a wonderful woodland on the Banks of the River Eske in Donegal Town. The River Eske rises in the Bluestack Mountains, high above the Town of Donegal. The Eske tumbles down through the mountain streams and collects in Lough Eske, approximately 5km from the Diamond, from there it flows towards the town.
The River holds some fabulous species including the protected Freshwater Pearl Mussel, the Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout, Otters, and is recognised as a Special Area of Conservation (Lough Eske and Ardnamona Woods). Inner Donegal Bay has also been recognised as a Special Area of Conservation in regards its Mudflats, Sandflats and Dune Habitats and the presence of the Harbour Seal. Donegal Bay is also a Special Protection Area in regards Great Northern Diver (Gavia immer), Light-bellied Brent Goose (Branta bernicla hrota), Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra), Sanderling (Calidris alba) and the presence of extensive Wetland and Waterbirds species.
